WSOC: Second Half Surge Carries Matadors
YUMA, Ariz. – The offense continued to roll as the Arizona Western College Lady Matadors scored at least seven goals in their third consecutive match en route to a 7-1 victory over the Glendale Gauchos Thursday night at the Matador Soccer Field.
Sophomore Vera Asare was sensational with three goals and an assist, spurring the offense as the Mats scored six times in the second half to cruise to their third straight win.
After many near chances in the first twenty minutes against Glendale keeper Bryanna Norwood, the Matadors first goal came off of a rebound on the far post when Asare finished a near miss with the Matadors first score of the game.
The Glendale defense did not surrender many other chances in the first half and AWC held onto the 1-0 lead into the break.
But that didn’t stop Asare from finding her rhythm, as she struck to start the second half in the 47th minute to double the advantage.
That seemed to spark the Matador offense as a whole, as AWC peppered Norwood with chances and Elizabeth Ephraim benefitted on another rebound, following up into the left side of the netting in the 57th minute.
Karen Rivas joined the action 14 minutes later, finding Linda Obare on a beautiful pass setting up Obare’s first goal as a Matador in the 71st minute.
Obare returned the favor to setup teammate Parmira Candia’s first Matador goal on a cross that Candia netted just three minutes later.
Asare continued the stellar streak just one minute later with her third goal, and the Matadors third in just five minutes, extending the lead to 6-0.
The Matadors leading goal scorer, Tyra McKenzie struck late, on some beautiful passing from her teammates adding the seventh goal in the 83rd minute.
Glendale broke through just three minutes later when Abigal Abbott lofted a ball over Matador keeper Melanie Yanez to snap the Matadors clean sheet streak dating back four matches.
The win is the third straight for AWC and puts them above .500 after an 0-2-1 start.
The Matadors hit the road Saturday against Phoenix College. for a non-conference match at 4:30pm
